5 arrested in Romania for spreading email scam

Five Romanians were accused of spreading an email scam that infected users with Curve-Tor-Bitcoin (CTB) Locker and Cerber ransomware.

Police said the group rented ransomware families and packaged them inside archived files meant to look like invoices, according to Bleeping Computer. The gang then sent the files as attachments in email spam.

The group kept 70% of the ransom payments, with the rest going to the portals they purchased the ransomware from.

Romanian authorities seized several hard drives, laptops, external storage devices and documents during the searches and arrests.
