Users holiday shopping on smartphones they also use for work

Every year, IT must prepare for a wave of users doing their holiday shopping online while at work, but this time around, there may be a new challenge:

Employees will be shopping with their own personal smartphones and tablets.

That’s the word from a recent survey from the non-profit IT advisory group ISACA.

The 1,200 employees surveyed will spend an average of 32 hours doing online holiday shopping this year, with 11 of those hours taking place on a personal mobile device that is also used for work tasks.

That makes the security risks associated with online shopping on the company network even more of an issue, because personal devices are harder to secure, ISACA says.

One way IT can help manage the risks: Create policies and educate users about them. The survey found that users who are aware of their IT department’s security policies are less likely to engage in risky behavior than those who aren’t.
