Research: 4G LTE networks may not be as safe as you think

Research from Purdue University and the University of Iowa reveals 10 new types of attacks that can be used against carrier networks.

Attackers could track device owners, eavesdrop on texts and spoof warning messages used by the government and weather agencies, which could cause mass panic.

Because so many different carriers control LTE networks, there’s little consistency in how security measures and standards are implemented.

Although many carriers have attempted to patch the vulnerabilities, there’s a long way to go. And full security evaluations are difficult due to a lack of transparency among carriers.
