How much data do companies process every year? It’s a number so high, you may have never even heard of it.
The answer: 9.57 zettabytes (ZB) in total across the globe.
Written out, that’s 9,570,000,000,000,000,000,000 bytes. In other words, it’s a lot of data.
That’s the figure cited by a recent report published by the University of California, San Diego.
Per employee, that averages out to three terabytes a year, or 12 gigabytes a day.
All that data is creating new challenges for IT departments. The amount of data stored and processed by companies increases rapidly, and so does the capacity of storage devices — but that doesn’t mean all companies have been able to keep up with upgrades to their storage infrastructure.
That’s one big reason small and mid-sized companies have started adopting cloud storage services.
