Malware attacks Android phones from repackaged apps

Smartphone malware has yet to become a huge threat in the U.S. But a recent attack shows that doesn’t mean it’s not out there.

A Trojan targeting Android users in China was recently discovered, according to mobile security firm Lookout.

The malware, known as HongTouTou, has been included in several repackaged apps from a variety of third-party app markets. The program then performs search functions in the background to emulate clicks for certain websites and could possibly be used to monitor SMS conversations.

If your company issues smartphones to users, it’s a good idea to keep a tight control over what apps can be installed on the device.
