Malware attack hits Atlanta’s government

Hackers held Atlanta’s computer systems hostage for a week, hamstringing the ability of employees to get work done.

Citizens were unable to do things like pay traffic tickets online, use the free Wi-Fi at the airport, or report potholes or graffiti.

The attackers requested approximately $51,000 in bitcoin to relinquish their hold on the systems, but it’s unclear whether the city paid that ransom.

The malicious actors, believed to be the hacking crew SamSam, encrypted the city’s files and made them impossible to access, requiring employees to rely on pen and paper for their duties.

Similar attacks have occurred in cities like Dallas, although this one is more severe.
