Carrier pigeons faster than e-mail for some people

Internet connections in some rural areas may be in need of serious improvement.

At least that’s conclusion of one British ISP based on a recent stunt that stacked broadband networks against an age-old communication technique.

Representatives from Timico strapped USB keys holding 300 MB video files to 10 carrier pigeons in Yorkshire. At the same time the pigeons were released, researchers started uploading the same file.

By the time the pigeons reached their destination, 75 miles away, only 24% of the file had been uploaded, the BBC reports.

Said Timico’s Tref Davies: “This is the UK. It should be well-connected, but around a third of homes still can’t get broadband.”
